CLASSICAL MUSIC IN OUR COMMUNITY
Grand Concerts Youth Outreach Program
2024 school visits - Colorado Children’s Chorale and Texas Guitar Quartet
2025 school visits - Hijinx Clarinet Quartet and Opera Colorado
2026 school visits - Opera Colorado and Alias Brass
Every year Grand Concerts brings musicians to perform for the children of Grand County at no cost to the students or the schools.
From participating in vocal workshops to introducing rare instruments to students to discussing what it’s like to be a professional musician, these school visits provide opportunities for students to learn more about the music world and experience world-class performances right in their own classrooms.
Many thanks to the generosity of our Grand County community for making these events possible for our kids!
As a reminder, Grand County students can attend any regular concert for FREE!
Joan & Roger Shaw Memorial Scholarship Fund
Joan and Roger Shaw were amazing musicians and did much to promote classical music in our community. They were founding members of the Grand Concerts board in 2002, started the Annual Mountain Messiah Sing-Along, volunteered their talents in our schools, and played for numerous weddings and events. Joan would entertain guests by playing the piano in the Gasthaus Eichler dining room and give away her tips to pay for young students’ private music lessons.
After Joan died suddenly, Roger found $700 in tip money and donated it to Grand Concerts. After Roger’s passing Grand Concerts used that seed money and started a memorial scholarship honoring them in their name. Every year Grand Concerts awards a $1000 scholarship to a Grand County graduating senior who will go on to major in music. Grand Concerts has awarded 5 scholarships so far—many thanks to all of you who donated to our scholarship fund.
Check Out the Music Program
In 2006, the Grand County Blues Society (GCBS) partnered with the Grand County Library District (GCLD) to get instruments into the hands of young people displaying an interest or affinity for music. This began the endearing Check Out the Music Program. Through this program, folks throughout Grand County can borrow instruments from their local library using their library card.
Acoustic guitars, electric and bass guitars with amplifiers, keyboards, youth-size guitars, drumsticks, and drum pads were donated by GCBS to Grand County libraries and were available to the public—for FREE! Today, the library has a wealth of resources for Colorado classical music, including a collection of over 20 musical instruments.
Guy Fishman, cellist, has been a concerto soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestral player with numerous performances across the US. Renee Hemsing specializes in chamber music and early music performance on both violin and viola and has toured widely in the US and Europe. Both artists have deep ties with the Handel + Haydn Society and The University of Colorado. Recently married and now touring together, their performances have been described as “electrifying” by The New York Times.
